THE LIGHT WITHIN
August 1st - September 15th
“I am shading in reverse, pulling light from darkness, bringing attention to the highlights, cultivating mystery... I am inviting the viewer in, so they can fill in the rest.”
- Mitchell Lonas
Callan Contemporary is pleased to present The Light Within, a solo exhibition of new works by Mitchell Lonas. Through a new body of intricately engraved aluminum paintings, Lonas continues his exploration of light as both a physical phenomenon and a quiet force that shapes memory, perception, and the human experience.
At the center of The Light Within is the recognition that life is seldom defined by moments of certainty, but by continual movement—through growth and loss, clarity and ambiguity, beginnings and return. Like the changing rhythms of the natural world that have long informed his practice, Lonas understands transformation not as an isolated event but as an enduring condition. Every season leaves its mark; every passage alters the landscape from which the next emerges.
This understanding finds its expression in surfaces that refuse to remain fixed. Working on painted aluminum, Lonas carves thousands of hand-cut incisions into each composition, creating works that are completed only in the presence of light. Their appearance shifts with every change in atmosphere and every movement of the viewer. Shadows deepen. Reflections dissolve. No single perspective offers a complete image. Instead, the work unfolds gradually, asking the viewer to become an active participant in its continual transformation.
Nature has always served as Lonas' visual language, yet here branches, leaves, and organic forms transcend representation to become metaphors for lived experience. Networks of growth mirror the unseen paths that define a life—moments of connection, fracture, resilience, and renewal. Just as roots expand beneath the surface and light filters patiently through a forest canopy, meaning often reveals itself slowly, accumulating over time rather than arriving all at once.
In this exhibition, light is neither simply subject nor effect. It becomes a presence that animates the work from within, revealing what is otherwise unseen. It speaks to the quiet resilience that persists through change—the capacity to continue searching, adapting, and becoming despite uncertainty. The title, The Light Within, suggests that illumination is not something encountered externally alone, but something cultivated through experience, reflection, and endurance.
Lonas' meticulous process embodies this philosophy. Each engraved line represents an act of patience, each surface the result of countless deliberate gestures. The accumulation of these marks recalls the accumulation of a life itself: individual moments that may appear inconsequential in isolation, yet together form a landscape of extraordinary depth and complexity.
There is a quiet generosity in these works. They do not seek immediate resolution or spectacle. Instead, they reward sustained attention, revealing themselves slowly through the interplay of light, movement, and time. In doing so, they offer a space for contemplation—one in which viewers may recognize something of their own journey reflected in the shifting surfaces before them.
Rather than presenting nature as something observed from a distance, The Light Within reminds us that we are inseparable from its rhythms. We move through seasons of expansion and retreat, certainty and doubt, darkness and illumination. The exhibition proposes that these cycles are not obstacles to overcome but the very conditions through which growth becomes possible.
In an era defined by acceleration and distraction, Mitchell Lonas offers an alternative: an invitation to pause, observe carefully, and discover that what changes before our eyes may also awaken something enduring within us.
